The verb ESTAR is one of the forms of the verb “TO BE” in English, the verb ESTAR is an irregular verb, since it presents final changes in some tenses and modes.
“Estar” is a verb that we use on temporary occasions and let’s not forget that they can be used with an adjective, but if you use “SER” in a sentence and then change it to “ESTAR” the meaning of the sentence will not be the same.

We use the verb “estar” to locate people and animals.

GERUND (ING) + ESTAR
We use this verbal formula to talk about when we are performing an action at the precise moment in which we are saying it.
Estoy cocinando.
María está bailando salsa.

QUALITY
We use “ESTAR” for qualities that are only temporary and it’s also possible to use it with ADJECTIVES.

We can use ESTAR when we want to talk about moods.
